Ultrasound Q&A

What is ultrasound imaging?

Ultrasound imaging is a medical imaging technique that gives you an up-close view of your organs and tissues. It also shows blood as it flows through your body. Unlike other imaging techniques like X-rays, ultrasound imaging creates a real-time picture that you and Dr. Tun can watch on a screen.

The full-time ultrasound technician at Dr. Tun’s office uses state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment to create 3D images. They use duplex Doppler ultrasounds to view your blood as it flows through your arteries and veins.

Using this technology, Dr. Tun can estimate the speed of your blood flow and other characteristics. He can also find blockages and diagnose other issues related to your cardiovascular health.

How does ultrasound imaging work?

An ultrasound machine produces soundwaves that go through your body without the need for any incisions, injections, or other invasive techniques. You can’t feel it as it happens, but your organs, tissues, blood, and other components in your body reflect the soundwaves back to the machine.

Doppler ultrasounds are unique because they specifically highlight moving materials in your body, like blood and other fluids. During your Doppler ultrasound at Dr. Tun’s office, you’ll change into a hospital gown and lie down on an examination table.

The ultrasound technician spreads gel onto the handheld device before gliding it across your skin over the area being examined. The device delivers soundwaves through your tissues, and you can watch the image as it appears on a monitor nearby.

The ultrasound technician might place blood pressure cuffs around your extremities during the test to read your blood pressure at certain points along your arm or leg. Ultrasounds are conveniently performed in-house. The entire procedure takes about an hour, and Dr. Tun helps you interpret your results.

What can ultrasound imaging help diagnose?

The results of your Doppler ultrasound can help Dr. Tun diagnose a range of conditions affecting your cardiovascular functioning. If you come in with symptoms related to such conditions, like swollen arms or legs, Dr. Tun might use ultrasound imaging to find out if you have:

  • A blood clot
  • An aneurysm (a bulging artery)
  • A defective heart valve
  • Venous insufficiency

A general ultrasound can help diagnose conditions unrelated to your blood flow, like issues with your liver, spleen, thyroid, uterus, ovaries, and other internal organs. Dr. Tun tells you why you need an ultrasound before you get one and how the results may help you get the right treatment for your condition.

If you have unusual symptoms, call Jeffery Tun, MD, or book an appointment online to find out if ultrasound imaging can help diagnose you today.
