High Blood Pressure Q&A

What is high blood pressure?

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a common condition that many people don’t realize they have because of its lack of symptoms. Over time without proper management, it can lead to major health complications like stroke or various forms of heart disease. Dr. Tun can diagnose your high blood pressure before such complications arise.

Your blood pressure is the force your blood places on the walls of your arteries as it pumps through your body. If your arteries are narrow, your blood pressure is higher than average.

What causes high blood pressure?

High blood pressure can come from several different causes. The two main categories of high blood pressure are:

Primary hypertension

Primary hypertension develops gradually as you age and often has no discernible cause. However, it may be linked to a poor diet, a lack of exercise, or a genetic predisposition.

Secondary hypertension

Secondary hypertension appears because of other conditions affecting your health. You might get secondary hypertension if you have sleep apnea, kidney problems, thyroid problems, or other health complications. You can also get it by taking certain medications or illicit drugs.

How is high blood pressure diagnosed?

Dr. Tun checks your blood pressure as part of your routine physical exams. He measures your blood pressure as part of biometric testing, a standard clinical screening that records many aspects of your health, like your heart rate and blood pressure, as well as physical characteristics like your height and weight.

Dr. Tun can also run an EKG in his office or refer you for a stress testing to evaluate your heart function and stamina under stress. In some cases, Dr. Tun will suggest you get an advanced heart imaging test, called an echocardiogram. This device creates an image of your heart and its chambers using soundwaves. Dr. Tun refers you to an outside provider to do this test so he can find out about your heart’s strength, shape, and size, and gather other useful information.

How can I manage my high blood pressure?

With the right treatment plan, you can lower your blood pressure and your risk for complications associated with high blood pressure. Dr. Tun works with you to develop a treatment plan based on your lifestyle and the things contributing to your hypertension.

Your plan might include:

  • A heart-healthy diet
  • Recommendations for regular exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Stopping smoking
  • Limiting your alcohol consumption

If these lifestyle changes aren’t enough to lower your blood pressure to a normal level, Dr. Tun can also prescribe medications to reduce your blood volume, expand your blood vessels, or otherwise lower your blood pressure.
