In-House Laboratory Q&A

What is an in-house lab?

The in-house lab is a convenient feature at Dr. Tun’s office. There, he can obtain samples and test for specific diseases right away, enabling you to get the results of many of the available tests within a day. Dr. Tun interprets your results and advises whether you need treatment.

Which types of lab tests can I get?

Dr. Tun provides testing for many diseases and conditions. After a physical exam, he might recommend one of the following lab tests:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

The PCR test has revolutionized virus and bacteria testing. The test can isolate small pieces of foreign DNA from your bodily fluid. DNA polymerase, an enzyme that replicates your DNA, elongates the sample so it can be diagnosed. The foreign DNA comes from pathogens causing specific diseases and infections. The PCR test at Jeffery Tun, MD, tests for at least 30 different types of pathogens.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD)

Using a sample of your urine or a swab from your mouth or genitals, Dr. Tun can test you for common STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital herpes, syphilis, and some types of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Urinary tract infection (UTI)

You might develop a UTI if bacteria or other microbes make their way into your urethra, bladder, ureters, or kidneys. You must provide a urine sample for a UTI test.

Upper respiratory infection

If you have a cough and cold symptoms that go on for longer than 10 days, Dr. Tun might recommend a blood test or a throat swab to find out if you have an upper respiratory infection.

COVID-19

If you have respiratory symptoms associated with COVID-19 or have had contact with another person who tested positive for the virus, Dr. Tun can provide the test for you. He collects a sample from your sinuses using a long swab to reach the part of your throat behind your nose. Call ahead before getting a COVID-19 test to make sure you meet the criteria.

What should I expect of an in-house lab test?

Dr. Tun tells you what to expect during your specific lab test according to the type of sample you must provide. He uses certain devices to make the testing process easier. If you need a blood test, he uses a hand-held device called a vein finder to locate your veins, preventing unnecessary poking.

If your test requires a urine sample, Dr. Tun can use an imaging test to ensure you empty your bladder when you urinate. Post-void residual (PVR) is a bladder problem causing urine to remain in your bladder after you urinate.
